Questions & Facts

Q.  When do Hot Air Balloons Fly?

A.  Hot Air Balloons typically fly at sunrise and 1 ˝ to 2 hours before sunset. These are the times when the winds are the most calm and favorable for flying.

Q. What kind of Clothes should I wear and what should I bring?

A. Comfortable shoes, sneakers preferably moister proof because of the dew in the morning and a light jacket or sweater, particularly in the spring and fall and most important a Camera.

Q. How long will my flight last?

A. Typically a balloon flight lasts about 1 hour, but the time can vary due to many factors. You should figure about between 2-3 hours for everything, meeting, setting up, flying, packing up and your after flight Champagne Toast.

Q. Are Hot Air Balloons SAFE?

A. YES, Hot Air Balloons are very safe. They must be certified and inspected to the rigorous requirements that all aircraft must meet in the United States set by the Balloon manufacture and the FAA. Hot Air Balloons are inspected once a year or every 100 hours of commercial flight time by a FAA Certified Inspector.

Q. How does a Hot Air Balloon Fly?

A. A Hot Air Balloon Flies Simply by heating the air inside the Envelope. Liquid propane is sent through coils in the Burner or Burners where it is super heated by the flame from the Burner.  The Burner produces approximately 20 million BTUs. Enough heat to heat about 200 homes.  As the air in the Envelope is heated it produces lift.  The more heat, the faster the balloon will rise and higher it will go. As the air cools the balloon will stop rising and will begin to descend. It is a careful balance between adding heat and letting the Envelope cool that a Pilot must use to fly level, ascend or descend.  The Parachute Valve is used to allow hot air to escape through the top of the balloon. It is used also to control the balloons altitude and to deflate the balloon after the flight.

The Balloonists Prayer

The Winds have welcomed you with softness.

The Sun has blessed you with warm hands.

You have flown so high and so well,

that God has joined you in your laughter.

And he has set you gently back again

into the loving arms of Mother Earth.
